Thing #17 - Play in the Sandbox

This was an interesting and fun exercise. I think things like this would be useful if you wanted everyone to respond to an invitation to a program, instead of everyone emailing the person directly. Setting up a page to have everyone respond would be easier and helpful.

Thing #16 - Wikis

I always wondered why kids asked for sources besides wikipedia (when they come to the information desk). They stated their teacher did not want them to use wikipedia. I guess there is a lot of room for incorrect info on there. I didn't realize how it was collaborated. Very interesting, I have used it when I have searched on google but I think if I would want to use it as a source, I would want to have other sources as well. I thought the OCL page was designed well, very informative.

Thing #15 - Library 2.0 & Web 2.0

It is true what was said in this exercise, that libraries five or ten years down the road will look substantially different from libraries today. It is inevitable! I am not sure I completely understand Library 2.0 or Web 2.0 for that fact but we all have to learn. We don't stamp the back of the books anymore with the due date people have adjusted to that (slowly but they have). The schools have started using blackboard to help the parents see what and how there kids are doing encouraging the parents to get involved and even participate in feedback. Essentially what Library 2.0 is doing becoming more involved and encouraging feedback. I think I got the most out of "To a Temporary Place in Time" article. That one made me think back to when I was a kid and just remember the library being all about story-time. Times Change!

Thing #14 - Technorati

Ok, I am just going to say it, this week is not my favorite at all! I looked at the Top 100 picks for Technorati and I thought the blogs were so boring. I was thankful when I realized that they had a Movies tab and a Book tab. Now that was interesting. The Top 100 was too much techno stuff. Grant it I know we all need to know about new technology I just don't see myself reading that for enjoyment so i pleased to see that there were other option to choose from. The one thing I do like about tags is when you search one topic it gives you so many different related topics that helps if you are searching.

Thing #13 - Tagging

I think this is the first challenge that I don't think I would get a lot of use of. Maybe if I was in school and I had a list of favorite websites that I would use for reference it maybe helpful, but at this time I don't think I would use del.icio.us. If I was still in school or planning on going back to school this would be a great website to use for my favorite websites. I did like the list for summer reading program, i thought that was a good use of the website.

Thing #12 - NetLibrary & WorldCat

NetLibrary- I was suprised how easy NetLibrary was to sign-up. I know I have referred quite a few people to the reference desk to get set-up on NetLibrary. I cannot believe how easy it is to sign-up. It took me a little bit to realize that the books were mostly non-fiction types books. I don't think I got that right off the bat. I viewed a couple of travel guides which was interesting. I think for me that would be really great to use.

WorldCat - I have never actually used WorldCat before, I am not sure why I would use Amazon anymore to look up information for ILLs. I was told WorldCat doesn't give you the price but I saw an insert from amazon right on WorldCat stating the price that you find on Amazon. I like how they have all the information right there. When I am on Barnes and Noble or Amazon I am usually asking someone if this is the same as the ISBN and other information that I need to fill out the ILL.

Thing #11 - Library Thing

I have heard of Library Thing but I never actually used it myself (before today, of course). I picked 5 different books, three of the picks I would like to read and 2 of them I have read. I didn't find any of the books w/conversations attached to it, just ratings from other readers. I think its a great source if you like to keep track of what you have read. I think a lot of people would find this site useful.

Thing #10 - Technology Blogging

I feel so out of the loop w/technology it drives me nuts. Thankfully, excel, word and powerpoint have pretty much stayed the same or I would feel completely lost when it came to the computer. I use excel and powerpoint daily and love those programs but other then that i haven't kept up on things. I have 2 small kids that seem to want everything so it has been about 5 years since I have bought myself anything electronic. Thankfully my husband fixes computers for a living so he is able to keep my ancient laptop in up to date working order, but now-a-days kids have computers in kindergarten - that is insane!! I just want to complete this challenge, learn a few things, and get my new mp3 player (of course i have to learn how to use it).

Posted a commet to Technophone? blog - thing #6.

Thing #9 - Finding Feeds

Syndic8 was the easiest tool for me to use. I thought the search engine for it was the easiest to use and gave the results I was looking for. The other sites were ok, not that they were confusing but just the info I was given when I used the search engine wasn't what I was looking for. Plus this site is what other readers have put on. I like sites like that. Just like the deal websites I go to, it is mostly everyone just putting on info they have found on the web. I always find that helpful.

Thing #8 - RSS Feeds

The one thing I really liked about having a Blogline acct w/RSS feeds is for the different discussion boards I use for Walt Disney World. I usually check at least 2 of them a day and I was surprised to see that they actually had an RSS feed attached to the website. I also check out a lot of "deal of the day" type sites and I was surprised to see - dealtaker.com, Woot, and Yugster.com all have feeds for their deals of the day. That is really helpful.

Thing #6 - Library

I love this book Where the Wild Things Are. This picture is in the children's section at the Manchester Library.
